Zirconia crowns & bridges
Full-contour zirconia crowns to replace old metal-porcelain bridges with a more natural result.
Prosthodontics
Who is it for?
Many of the cases we share are zirconia crowns: patients arriving with old metal-porcelain bridges, dark margins or inflamed gums. Zirconia is a strong, biocompatible ceramic that lets us restore function and a more natural look. Where it helps, we combine it with E.max for the front teeth.
- Old metal-porcelain bridges or crowns with dark margins
- Teeth that have darkened after root-canal treatment
- Badly damaged teeth that can no longer be restored with a filling
- Irritated gums around old restorations
- Replacing missing teeth with a bridge, when that is the right option
How it works
- Examination and X-rayWe check your teeth, gums and existing restorations; a panoramic X-ray shows the roots and bone.
- Preliminary treatmentIf needed, teeth and gums are treated first (for example root canals or hygiene), so the new crowns sit on a healthy base.
- Preparation and impressionsOld restorations are removed, the teeth are prepared, impressions are taken and the shade is chosen.
- Temporary crownsYou usually wear temporary crowns while the final ones are made, for comfort and appearance.
- Try-in and cementationThe zirconia crowns are tried in, checked for bite and shade, and permanently cemented.
Materials and technology
Materials & technology
Full-contour zirconia
A crown made entirely of zirconia: metal-free, strong and clean at the gum line.
E.max (lithium disilicate)
For front teeth, when maximum translucency matters, it can be combined with zirconia.
Panoramic X-ray
A full view of teeth and bone for precise planning.
Orascoptic loupes
Optical magnification for precise preparation and clean margins.
We only treat what needs treating
In one of our cases, the lower jaw was not restored with crowns because the patient was young and her teeth were healthy; professional hygiene and whitening were recommended instead. That is our principle: preserve natural structure whenever possible.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
How is zirconia different from metal-porcelain?
Zirconia crowns contain no metal, so they don't create the dark line often seen at the edge of older crowns. Zirconia is strong and biocompatible, and gums usually tolerate it well.
Can old bridges be replaced?
In many cases, yes. Once the old bridge is removed, the doctor assesses the supporting teeth and gums and proposes the most suitable option for your case.
How long do zirconia crowns last?
With good hygiene and regular check-ups, zirconia crowns can last many years. Our patient Loretta, from Italy, has had zirconia and E.max restorations for 5 years, and her smile still looks as good as on day one. Results vary from patient to patient.
Does it hurt?
Preparation is done under local anaesthetic, so you usually feel little or no pain. Some mild sensitivity for a few days afterwards is normal.
How much do zirconia crowns cost?
It depends on the number of units and any preliminary treatment needed. Pricing is set after your consultation or photo assessment.
